An autobiography, 1920 (1956).

John Hamilton writes of his early years; education at Tuscarora Academy and Airy View Academy; service in the Juniata Cavalry, 1859-1864, before and during the Civil War (Company A, 1st Regiment, Pennsylvania Reserve Cavalry); enrollment in the Agricultural College of Pennsylvania, 1865-1871, where he studied civil engineering and subsequent employment at the college, 1866-1913, in various positions including Superintendent of College Farms, Professor of Agriculture, Director of Experimental Stations, and Treasurer. He discusses his appointments as Pennsylvania Deputy Secretary of Agriculture, 1895, where he pushed for good roads; as Secretary of Agriculture, 1899, where he advocated consolidated schools; and his appointment as chief, Office of Experiment Stations in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 1903-1914.
